Insurance Commissioner Kent Sullivan

Commissioner Kent SullivanKent Sullivan was appointed Commissioner of Insurance by Gov. Greg Abbott on September 21, 2017. He oversees the Texas Department of Insurance, which regulates the insurance industry and protects consumers. The agency has almost 1,400 employees statewide and an annual budget of more than $110 million.

Commissioner Sullivan has 35 years of legal experience. He previously served as a justice on the Texas Court of Appeals, a state district court judge, and first assistant attorney general for the Texas Office of the Attorney General.

Before joining TDI, Commissioner Sullivan was in private law practice. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Houston and Austin Bar Associations, and a life fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. He has served on the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors, the Texas Center for the Judiciary Board of Directors, the Federal Judicial Evaluation Committee, and the Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee.

Commissioner Sullivan received his law degree and a bachelor of arts from the University of Virginia.
